Review On The Book "SIX THINKING HATS" by 'Edward de Bono'

Thinking is the ultimate human resource. But the greatest difficulty of thinking is CONFUSIONS. This is because we do many works at a time. It is like juggling too many balls at a time. Author suggests ‘six thinking hats’ method for this problem.

Americans have tendency of arguing for any decision makings. They think that argument shape up the decisions. But Japanese people have contradictory tendency. They think arguments as utter waste of time. Because they think that arguments are ego-based and does not make a vibrant decisions.

With our past experiences and knowledge we create boxes. To encounter our present situations and problems, we will use these boxes which we have already created. For example, If a doctor is testing a patient he will use his ‘box of medicine’ to check what happened to the patient and what medicine can be suggested. In a standard world this standard box thinking is applicable. But in changing world it is not so. We need to think ‘WHAT CAN BE’ instead of ‘WHAT IS’. This is called as lateral thinking or out of box thinking or parallel thinking. This is the basic concept of ‘Six thinking hats’.

If four persons are standing on each side i.e one in front, one at back and two in each side of the house, all will say true that what they are seeing. Of course, they are true. All are true. What this parallel thinking suggests is we have to take all the persons and show each side of the house. Then all will understand there are more things than what they seeing and thinking.

What is SIX THINKING HATS?

Author for facilitating this parallel thinking method, created this ‘Six thinking hats’ method. Six hats are:

White – This hat is neutral and objective. Full of facts and data.

Red – This hat is full of emotions.

Black – This hat is full of cautions.

Yellow – This hat is full of positive thinking just opposite to Black hat

Green – This hat is full of creativity

Blue – This hat is control hat.

Some make review that this method is full of absurdness. Because its not possible in a meeting to ask the people use white hat and then other hats one by one. But it is not so. If you use this method and make practice, the time to make decisions come down. And it makes the decision more vibrant.

HOW?

Unity is strength. All people together try to bring out facts under white hat thinking and then all will try to bring out the positive outcomes and all will try to give cautions about the decisions. So it reduces the time for making decisions. This not ego-based. So people should not try to drag other people’s legs. Suppose if a person gives data that is taken about five years back, the other person should not say that he is wrong. Instead of that he should try to give real facts. Thus this bring down the quarrels and ego between people.

This reduces complexities, time and makes the decision faster.

Author gives various situations where this method is used and the benefits out of that. Many companies used this method to make their meetings better.

We can also use this method and make our life precious. Read this book and make your life successful.
